“How does it feel to treat me like you do?”. New Order’s Blue Monday lyrics poured out of the PA at Bushwick’s TV EYE as we waited for the velvet curtain to open for Synthicide: A night of thudding beats and sparkling digital arpeggios from Spookystack, Ghost Cop, and Sexual Purity. Dressed in our moodiest matte black, we shuffled and bobbed to the night's noise. Here’s what we recall:
Spookystack was a one man, multi-synth show. They opened with snarky slapback shouts over new wave beats, singing about how we’re not the same. The percussion hit hard with a twitchy sharpness and the stripped back-ness of a solo performance allowed every note and lyric to breathe. “My mom’s here tonight for the first time… anyway, this next song’s called ketamine”. It was our favorite song of the set, a minimalist club banger.
The curtain opened for Ghost Cop awash in blue light, in contrast to Spookystack's red. Slow synths groaned as a drum machine kicked us in the chest. These songs were made for the moodiest of dancefloors, we started referring to the vibe as nu-industrial. They played a bunch of songs off their recent 2024 album Trouble. We danced in the dark to this alternative soundtrack to Bladerunner.
Sexual Purity obscured themselves through some of the thickest layers of stage fog we’ve ever seen. Sometimes their frontwoman was only visible as a face, lit up by slow strobing lights. Carnal arpeggios and aggressive breakbeats were this duo's bread and butter. Passion and music hung in the air, floating around in the haze. We were in the middle of falling in love, a tangential story not fit for this publication, but this band's groovy atmosphere played an undeniable hand in it.
Nightvvitch was on the DJ decks in between sets, keeping the excitement alive with strings of new wave bangers. We stuck around for a bit after it was all over, savoring the synthesizer buzz. If you find yourself ever in the mood to get your synth on, think about Spookystack, Ghost Cop, and Sexual Purity. ‘Til next time, Rrrat Pack.
